INSTALLING INDIGLO GAUGES - Go for
it!
Well, I -finally- took pictures as I was doing an
install, and here are the results. Many thanks to GM
Typhoon for the excellent procedure he documented here a
few weeks ago... I took his words and put pictures
to them, along with some additional commentary. My
installation went pretty smooth, with the exception of a
couple minor glitches that I will detail later. For now,
I'll post this link and call it a night! sacd.home.comcast.net/indiglo/indiglo.htm

Great detail here Sac. Don't worry about the webpage.
Less noise is better
Question for you; Is the indiglo visible in the
daylight? Is it so bright at night that you have to use
the dimmer to turn it down?
I'm asking because I
put blue bulbs in my guage cluster and they are just
bright enough at full brightness. I am looking to get
those super bright blue LED lights that will go in. They
will be more than bright enough. Personally, I like the
original guages but would like blue lighting a la VW.

Re:

The gauges are rather bright at night, so I do
anticipate using the dimmer a lot. They don't really
show up in full daylight though. As for the '194'
bulbs in the cluster... someone had mentioned that the
original light 'leaks' through the new gauges a bit. I
noticed this last night and may go back in and place
some electrical tape in there to mask it. You can't just
remove the bulbs, because then the needles won't
illuminate. At least that's what I think happens.

Re:

Update: My tachometer gauge started to flicker and
then within 5 minutes it was history. This afternoon I
had time to mess with it, and the result was
confirmation that everything is fine except the gauge
itself. I called ProCarParts, and after being on hold
for a total of ten minutes over two calls, was told that
they would send out a new one (tach only) and I should
have it by monday or tuesday. My fingers are crossed on
that. I asked if they wanted me to ship the old one back
and the guy just laughed... I guess they know you have
to cut them to get them off. The funniest part was when
the guy looked up the order in their system and he said
"HYUNDAI SANTA FE??? I didn't even know we had stuff for
those!!"

LATEST NEWS: Okay, I received a replacement
tachometer gauge from ProCarParts in the mail today,
popped it in, and it works fine. (Entire Forum
breathes a sigh of relief) So despite that one little
inconvenience, props to them for being responsive when
it mattered most! AND... I am delighted with the
final result... especially for $29.95!

Re:

p.s. I popped out one of the 194 bulbs of the
instrument cluster, and YES they are what illuminates
the needles on the gauges. So removing them is not
really the answer for light leakage through the edges of
the gauges. I'm thinking the answer is: (1) spray
paint the back sides of the indiglo gauges (2)
laboriously cut and fit electrical tape over the
backs or (3) don't worry about it. Actually, I'm
starting to kind of like that soft green glow that leaks
around the edges

Ex, there's no reason for you not to make up a guide.
There are always benefits from another view of the same
thing... and making a tutorial is good discipline and
gets you in the habit of being methodical. That in turn
will encourage you to do so with other
projects. Also, for those members pondering this
particular mod, it will be helpful for them to see
additional info on the process and could provide the
confidence to proceed where they might otherwise chicken
out.

Re:

The more the merrier,
In upgrading my website,
I plan on having a modifications page that lists all the
mods made to the Santy that were presented within the
forum so far. But I think there should be a link on the
forum itself that would link to the members website
where the documentaion is. This would help current and
new members a quick way to locate the information
without having to search the subforums for the info or
links.
What do you all think, maybe we can
convince gopack to set up a page with the mods links.

Re:

i think that would be a great idea! you could post a
link at the top of this forum (installs/ how to?/ faq)
to a page like you described and also have another link
somewhere in the main webpage.

Re:
INSTALLING INDIGLO GAUGES - Go for it!
Okay I added / fixed the following on my
website. 1-I added a Windshield flyer for those that
want to have something bigger to leave on the windshield
of other Santys. (in the download section)
2-
Added a reference link that shows you how to print more
than one card on a sheet if desired. (also in the
download section)
3- Added footnotes to recognize
the contributions of the members in helping me make the
business cards and flyer.
4- Added a
modifications page that allows visitors to be redirected
to the members /forums website that has the guides on
certain modifications that have been done on the Santa
Fe, so far.
If any of you have another
suggestions or feel I missed a contributor, feel free to
email me (in my profile) or post it under this thread.

Re:

nah, i havent had the money or time to track down a new
cluster and buy it. i just keep track of the mileage and
feed here every 150 miles.
hey, i took some pics on how i installed my gauges
(where i put the wires and the switch). they are kinda
hard to see, but they may just help someone down the
road. you may need to copy the pic and then paste it to
paint or something to be able to see it. photos.yahoo.com/bc/onigo...ix&.view=t

gauges
dude, I thought I was going to s!@$ razor blades when I
saw my pal working that gauge over the base of the
needle. you have to be really really careful. But if you
own a Santa Fe then you deserve these they totally
rock!!!! Hyundai should make this standard on all the
santy's. I just left my indiglo adjustor up in the fuse
box thingy because I was leary about drilling holes or
cutting or anything. I don't know how to post pics of it
or I would.

Re:
gauges
Yes, the moment the gauge slides over the "bean" on the
dial is excruciating... but once it pops into place,
it's worth the momentary agony. Definitely not for the
faint of heart. And yes, it should be a standard
feature. I rented a Dodge Intrepid when I was in Georgia
the past few days, and it had white face gauges. Looked
fine in the day time, but at night I was disappointed
because they just looked like regular gauges when lit.
Indiglo is truly the best!
Enjoy those gauges!

Re:
gauges
I received my indiglo gauge faces a little while ago
and I think I'm going to install them this weekend. I
read through the step by step instructions posted by Sac
D...OUTSTANDING. Thanks to GM Typhoon and Sac D for
their time and effort.
I had a comment about
securing the new faces to the old ones. plan on leaving
the old ones in and the steps mention using double sided
tape, superglue and rubber cement to secure the new to
the old ones. I don't really want to do
that.
What do you think about just dabbing some
silicone on the old faces?
That should hold them
well with the bonus that if you had to remove the
indiglo gauge faces, it would still be possible.

Re:
gauges
A dab of silicone should be fine. I used nothing on the
speedo and tach, and a dab of rubber cement on the small
gauges because I had read so much about them being a
hassle. But really, I doubt anything is necessary. As
long as you hold everything steady and in place until
you hear the black fascia pop in, they will be fine. The
fascia hold the entire gauge very firmly. I also
discovered another trick... the "two spoons" process to
move the needle assembly out from the gauge face a tad
if it's sticking. Hopefully you won't need to worry
about that, but if so, let me know and I will explain
it. Good luck. Take some pics as you go!

Re:
gauges
Well, I just finished putting in the gauge faces.
Tomorrow, I'll finish up the wiring. Here are a couple
of notes and tips to add to the excellent instructions
from Sac D:
- When sliding the gauge faces over the needles,
push down so the gauge face goes as far as possible
under the front of the center bulb first, then
continue and pull along the narrower sides of the
needle bulb. It'll be much easier to push over the
back if you pull it under the front first.
- When sliding the gauge faces over the needles,
make sure that they don't get caught. There are some
plastic pieces sticking up to guide the faces to the
final locations. If they get caught on these and you
keep forcing them, the face may slip. Be careful and
slow.
- When putting the gauge face on the speedometer,
you first start the face on the needle...just a
little. Then, move the needle with the face while
trying to put it over the odometer reset post. After
you've got it on the odometer reset post, pull the
face further over the needle and return the needle
back to 0. Then, you can complete the install
easily.
One other thing that I did which may or
may not make it easier is to completely remove the
gauges from the pod. I did each gauge one at a time and
reinstalled them as I completed them.
I'll repost
after I've finished the wiring.
Well...it's the
next day and I've finished hooking up the wiring. It
looks great. Now, I just have to decide whether I like
the green or the blue better.
