santy blue
Hi all
The pod inspired me to do a few more modifications to my
Santa Fe, the following photo's show just one project.
Lots more ideas yet to come let me know what you think about this one.

Re: santy blue
Nice work Doug. Question for you though; what wire harness are you attaching the LED to? Is yours the newer model that has all of the window switches lit at night?
I would like to mount LEDs to the underside of the curved portion of the door vents but there would not be a light harness in each door as only my driver's window switch is lit. I'll likely just get my power from the power window switch.

Re: santy blue
Hey Congo, you read my mind.
I've seen these clip on type LEDs on www.Motorcraft.co.kr (Korean site) that you can place on the rear lights (link # 12 below) as well as door
LEDs on the underside (link # 9 below) that might be what you are thinking of doing. I wanted to do the same for the rear side doors (the front ones already have lights that turn on when the door is opened but not the rear ones.

Yes yes yes send plane ticket I'll get my tools together, we can soon have all the extra lights you want installed, probably only take me a few months (I take it
I'll have to stay in a hotel) 4 star please. He He.
Congo99
Well mines a 2002 model registered June and all switches do light up.
I presume you want to light up your window switches from above?.
The wiring harness is photo No6 and it shows how many wires are in all doors except the drivers, as that has a few more for operating other windows and mirrors.
I would check out how many wires are in yours as they may be there.
But all window switches must have the ability to be lit up. I don't think they would mould different switches as it costs money.

hey Oni,
for some reason that doesn't surprise me that you did most of the mods
Hey Congo
Quote: "Congo School of Wire Harness Management"
too funny.
hey Doug
In the list I provided of that Korean site in # 9, it shows adding leds on the underside of the door trim so that when you open up the door it lights up. I might try something like that but also add a light like the one in # 12 but in red that is bigger for the side of the door. This way when it opens any car behind me would see that a door is opened.
Even though that mod is for a different vehicle, I'll just have to get the parts (leds and side light) and then look in the electrical manual and figure out how to do it. I'll tell you this much it won't be anytime soon with these Polar Ice Caps
temperatures.
Before long I'm gonna have more lights than Studio 54

Re: santy blue
TS,
Putting lights in the rear doors will likely mean having to run wiring from one of the other interior lights. The easiest way may be to feed a wire from the interior dome light.
On my 2K2 here in Canada, I have the red lights in the front doors but they are not functional. When I had the door panel off, the wire harness was sitting there waiting to be hooked up so I will have to get the socket and bulb to make them active. Just another cost cutting measure by Hyundai to keep it under a certain price point I guess.

Re: Mods galore
I'm located in Toronto but I occasionally drive down to Buffalo. I actually
pre-ordered these from a dealer in the States and then drove down to get them. I
found part numbers and dealer through the Hyundai USA site.
I had to buy the lenses and the bulb assembly that plugs into the connector in the door panel. I also bought the cabin filter at the same time. Here are the part numbers and prices in US dollars:
92632-26000 LENS-DR LAMP LH 2.38
92642-26000 LENS-DR LAMP RH 2.38
92631-26000 BULB ASSY-DR LAMP LH 3.51
92641-26000 BULB ASSY-DR LAMP RH 3.51
Order Totals $ 11.78
Adds a nice touch. I would have paid Hyundai an extra $12 to have them do this at the factory. Oh well.

Re: Mods galore
It just amazes me that there are little differences between the US and CDN versions. The Canadian GLS is "almost" the same as the US version LX....just small differences we find all the time. Guess it's just what the various importers want...$$$ issue I guess. Seems to me that red door lens wouldn't cost anymore than the plastic cover they used.

You know, this might be a bit off topic but I would love to see a report or datasheet that shows what each model has
that's destined to the different destinations the model is going to. It will be
great to compare them.

Re: Mods galore
Coming from a supply chain management and manufacturing background, I think it would cost more to have the two different assemblies. You have to order, stock, and handle two
different part numbers as well as have a different setup when assembling the door panel. Doesn't make sense to me.

Hi Doug.
I like your mod to put a led on each door so you can see the handle. Would you please tell me what type of led you used and did you have to put a resistor in line with it, if so what was the resistance?
Thanks.

Re: santy blue
nbdave.
No problem I used those license plate blue LEDs you can buy in pairs, they come complete with built in resistors.
Size was 5mm dia.
All you do is remove them from their holders and fit wherever you want.
OR you can also buy just plain Hi brightness blue LEDs, the resistor depends on certain values of the LED itself, IE; it's maximum voltage e.t.c.
If you tell me all the details of the LEDs you can obtain I will work out the resistor for you.
I think there's a site call 12 volt. COM that has the correct way to work out that sort of thing.
Hope this is some help.

Re: santy blue
Thanks hardydoug.
I appreciate your help. I'll just go to my local Radio Shack and get them to sell me the correct resistor for what ever led I chose.
I suppose though, if I buy the license plate led's there might be some sort of clip that I can use to fasten the led to the door. If not, how did you fasten
yours in place?
I'll do the mod once we get rid of about 3 feet of snow.
Thanks again.
Happy motoring!!!

Re: santy blue
nbdave.
If you look at the photos in the (Santy Blue thread) it's all in there.
Small length of heat shrink is all I used along with a small tie wrap.
If your buying LEDs the tell them it's for 12 volt operation and they should work out the value of resistor.
Happy wiring......

Re: santy blue
nbdave,
I just saw a 3 pack of LEDs at my local AutoZone, maybe Canadian Tire has the same thing. They come is several different colors ie: red, blue, green, white and were, I think, $9.95 for the pack....they had red/black pigtails on them that looked to be about 2 feet long. They also had the resistor built in. The bulbs have little black plastic sleeves around them and the directions said to drill a 7/32" hole then just push them in. Said if they were to be connected to a power source with low power of "4" or less (don't know what the "4" is-amps or volts I suppose) then the resistors would have to be removed. Looked like a good deal to me. Didn't buy them but will later so I can light up my door lock switches etc. |

If your thinking of lighting up the door lock switches, I'm doing some tests on those things to see if I can feed some LEDs in somehow.
Don't know if it will work yet but it may be better than fitting something to shine down on the switches?
When I looked at those switches I could not see any way that Hyundai could ever have lit them.
Actually had trouble lighting the switches that came with the pod unit but managed to fit LEDs inside them, eventually.

Re: santy blue
Doug,
I'm electronically challenged so I await your wise words. If I were to do the mod using the LEDs I mentioned above, I'd just drill the little hole and poke them through from the inside of the door shell and wire 'em up to ground and power for the lighted window switch. That would work wouldn't it?? |

Re: santy blue
RI'B:
They (the LEDs) would be 'on' all the time. LEDs don't take much juice but it all adds up, eh? Look what happened to nomogm. It'd be nice if you could feed a dash light power lead into the door, easily.
I've got to get myself an SF electrical manual. I want to put a dash switch in, to turn on the cabin ceiling lamp.

Re: santy blue
Well, if I drew power from the lighted window switch....would only be on when the parking/head lights are on. That would be the same as drawing power from a dash light which only comes on with headlights too. |

Yes you can just poke the LED through and yes you can wire up to any power source.
I am wondering, do US Santa Fe have illuminated switches in the doors or not?

Re: santy blue
Doug, the US Santys 2002 and 2001 are illuminated but only the driver's window switch...nothing else. One of the 2002.5 changes was to light all the switches even on the other doors. That carries over to the 2003 models. Problem is the lighted switch has a more clear logo (little picture of the window on the switch) that allows the LED to shine in the switch...the unlighted switches are a bit different color that probably won't transmit the light. Understand what I mean??? It was suggested to me (unnamed service manager) that if I were to have a "problem" with my master switch it could be replaced with the newer model that lights all the switches. |

Re: santy blue
RIB
Yes I know what you mean about the switches having a small window symbol on them, thats the kind I have in mine.
Just a thought, if you could fit the new type switches as your (unnamed service manager) suggested, then it follows the wiring is already there for switches to be lit when installed? So if you decide to fit an LED then just wire up to the wire feeding the switch anyway. |

Re: santy blue
Doug,
From what I've been told the later model switch is just a swap-out for the old one....wiring is the same, just that each individual switch has an LED in it. Part is $132.00 and yes, my source who must remain anonymous suggested that if the little window pics on each switch were to "wear out" might be a warranty issue. |

Re: santy blue
I love the light mod for the door handles. I'm looking for the parts right now. One thing though...I'm going to do it a little different. I think I will mount them from the top pointing down in the handle well. And I was thinking of adding a capacitor (with a diode, do I need a diode) so that when I turn off the car the handle lights stay on for about 10 seconds. Can any-one tell me if this is possible, and what type and value components I would use. Any input on this idea would be
grateful. |

Re: santy blue
tomc585
I looked at all the places for the LEDs to fit but found that light intrusion from fitting the LEDs anywhere else seemed to light up the interior of the Santy at night.
I still get very small areas of blue light inside but they do look very coooool.
As to getting them to remain on when you leave the car, well you could just rely on the Santy turning it's own lights off when you leave?

Re: santy blue
I found some 12VDC LEDs in green (3mm) they seem like they will work perfect. Radio Shack has SQUAT. Went to 3 different stores. Nobody had 12volt leds. Then I found a place right around the corner from my house. Pack of 3 for $1.29. I stumbled upon this place while looking for some 1/4 watt 1K resistors @ 1% for another project. (Pack of 25 for $1.49). What a deal. I spent an hour just doing mental inventory. Called a buddy of mine to help with the capacitor values. Will keep you guys up to date and will post some pics when I'm done.

Re: santy blue
tomc585,
Unless the green LED's are the high brightness type, they likely won't provide sufficient light output. Are the LED's green
colored plastic or clear. From the price you suggested, I am betting they are just normal indicator type LED's and not the high brightness type I think you want.

Re: santy blue
I have to agree. Congo is correct, if you only use standard type LEDs it won't look right and bright.
The LEDs I used were high brightness type like they use in those washer lights, they are
already wired with the correct resistor for 12 volt use, I'm sure they should be made in green if
that's the color you want. |
